JONESPORT – On Aug. 14, 2005, Dad passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born April 8, 1918, at Sandy River Beach, the son of Alvin and Nellie (Hartford) Smith. Dad graduated from Jonesport High School, Class of 1936. After graduation, he served his country until his retirement in 1974, with the military having served in both World War II and Korea. After retirement, Dad and Mom moved back to Jonesport in 1972, where he remained until his death. Dad was very active in his life after retirement; he and Mom owned Montgomery Ward store in Machias, he was a deputy sheriff for Washington County and a first selectman of Jonesport. He helped to develop the Jonesport Ambulance Service and Gaelic Square Apartments. In 1982, Dad was the chairman of the Sesquicentennial celebration in Jonesport. In his last few years he devoted himself to fishing and gardening at his home. Dad is survived by his children, daughter, Lori and husband, Stephen, son, Richard and wife, Linda, son, Dennis, daughter, Linda (Smith) and husband, David Autio; and 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Fisher. His most special grandchild was Smita, who brought great joy and happiness to his life. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, Karleen, Nancy, Richard, Cathy, James, Tammy, Maggie and Pete and their families. Dad was predeceased by his wife of 24 years, Dorothy McGuire, a son, Calvin and daughter, Leah; two sisters, Margery and Janetta; and a brother, Joe. He will be missed by all who knew him. I love you Daddy. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 17, 2005, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias. A funeral service will be held 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel (located in the older section of the cemetery), Augusta.
