BUCKSPORT – Clara I. (Mercer) Stubbs, 91, wife of the late Harry C. Stubbs, died Jan. 2, 2006, at a Bangor nursing facility. She was born June 14, 1914, in Milton, N.H., daughter of Harry and Sara (Deering) Mercer. She was a graduate of the Eastern Conference Seminary, Bucksport, where she played basketball, field hockey and did archery. She was a great fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics, but family was most important to her. She was a life member of Order of Eastern Star Felicity Chapter No. 195, Bucksport. Clara is survived by daughters, Joanne Grover and her husband, Les, of Orrington, Judy Harriman of Orrington, Bonnie MacBrayne and her husband, Jack, of Orland; sons, Richard Stubbs of Orland, William Stubbs and his wife, Nancy, of Bucksport; daughter-in-law, Gloria Stubbs of Blue Hill; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Harry C. Stubbs, Clara was predeceased by daughter, Marlene Jane Stubbs; son, Henry Thomas Stubbs; brother, George Mercer. Clara’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Stillwater Healthcare and Dr. Dale Walker for the care that Clara received. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick, officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until time of service. A gathering of conversation and refreshment will immediately follow the service at Clara’s house on Bayview Avenue, Bucksport. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clara’s memory may be made to the Stillwater Healthcare Activity Fund, 335 Stillwater Ave., Bangor, ME 04401 or to the Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
