BOOTHBAY – Jeffrey Douglas Raub, M.D., 54, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in Old Town. He was born Feb. 19, 1950, in Grove City, Pa., he was the son of Miriam Smith Raub and Dr. P. Lester Raub. Dr. Raub graduated from Greenville High School, Greenville, Pa., in 1968 and from Princeton University in 1972 with a degree in Biology. He attended Princeton on a wrestling scholarship and was a four-year member of the wrestling team. He was co-captain during his senior year when the team won its fourth straight Ivy League championship. Dr. Raub received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College, in Philadelphia, Pa., graduating with honors in 1976. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., where he received the Stanley B. Conklin research paper award in 1977. Soon after receiving board certification in Internal Medicine, his interest turned to the challenges of Emergency Medicine and he was board certified in Emergency Medicine in 1990 and recertified in 1999. He was a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Raub was a talented educator and shared his knowledge with healthcare professionals throughout the United States. He was active as an instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Emergency Medical Services Radio Command. He was an examiner for the Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians oral exam. Dr. Raub practiced emergency medicine in Sayre, Pa. then moved to Franklin, Pa. in 1982 and joined the staff of the Emergency Department at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center Northwest in Franklin, Pa. from 1982-1995. He served as director of the Emergency Department from 1989-1992. From 1995-2001, he was a member of the Emergency Department staff at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, where he was also an instructor in the Family Practice residency program. He served as the Medical Director of the Emergency Department of St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine from 2001-2003. He ardently served on many hospital and medical staff committees and was an active member of the Maine chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. At the time of his death, Dr. Raub was practicing Emergency Medicine at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay. Dr. Raub was an avid hunter and was especially passionate and expert in bow hunting. He was a nationally ranked marathon canoe racer and felt great joy paddling on his beloved Allegheny River. He also found great happiness hiking and exploring the woods and rivers of Maine and spent many contented hours paddling on Pushaw Lake. He was a gifted poet and physician who touched many peoples’ lives during his own lifetime. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents of Oriental, N.C., Dr. Raub is survived by his two children, Lindsey Christine and Stephanie Lynn Raub, both of Eugene, Ore.; three brothers and their wives, Daniel and Linda Raub of Aurora, Ohio, Brian and Lisa Raub of Moneta, Va. and Paul and Beth Raub III of Montoursville, Pa.; and his very dear friend, Barbara Hildreth of Old Town. Funeral services were held on Oct. 4, 2004, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, Pa.
