ROCKLAND – Francis J. McAlary, 88, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2003, at his home here. Born Dec. 30, 1914, in Old Town, he was the son of Allan F. and Elizabeth M. Hilchey McAlary. A 1932 graduate of Rockland High School, Mr. McAlary continued his education, graduating from the University of Maine with a degree in civil engineering in 1936. He attended Harvard and ultimately earned his master’s degree. Mr. McAlary entered the U. S. Army Air Corps just prior to World War II, and retired in 1962 from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was employed with public utilities in the New York area before retiring to Maine in 1979. An avid golfer, Mr. McAlary was a former member of the Rockland Golf Club as well as holding memberships in various communities where he resided during his careers. While living in Maine, he regularly traveled to Florida each year. Predeceased by his first wife, Edith “Glen” Raynham McAlary in 1981 and his second wife, Mae Franklin McAlary in 1995, Mr. McAlary is survived by one sister, Elizabeth M. Pease and her husband, Clyde; one niece, Glen E. Pease, all of Owls Head; and one step-daughter, Sandra Showell of Vero Beach, Fla. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Dr. D. Elizabeth Mauro will officiate. Interment will follow at Achorn Cemetery, Rockland. Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Rockland Public Library, 80 Union Street, Rockland, ME 04841.
