HANCOCK – Gerald M. Wilbur, 84, died at a Bangor hospital, Aug. 26, 2004. He was born at East-brook, May 5, 1920, the son of Leslie and Muriel Wilbur. Gerald graduated from the Franklin High School and received his business degree from Becker College. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was assigned to 10th Armored Division. While serving, his unit took part in the Battle of the Bulge. Gerald was always proud of his service to country. After returning from Germany he worked as a woodcutter for several years before going to work for Carter Lumber as a truck driver. He later worked for Hancock County Creamery in route sales and at MacQuinns, where he worked as a clerk of the works on several projects, he then worked at Britts Department Store where he ran the sporting department. Following his time there, he worked as a postal employee eventually becoming the postmaster of Sedgwick. For the past 14 years, Gerald had worked at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home. Gerald never tired of learning and most recently had been taking a course in Biblical Hebrew. He served as a minister at the Mariaville, Eastbrook, and the Oceanville Baptist Churches. He was member of the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth, where he had served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Board of Deacons and had been the head deacon. Over his time as a minister he married and buried hundreds of people, he was most proud of his success rate with burials. He is survived by two sons, Thomas and wife, Ellen, of Levant, Charles and wife, Beth, of Franklin; one daughter, Diane and husband, David Pluard, of Hancock; a daughter-in-law, Debra of Eastbrook; four grandchildren, Jonathan, currently serving in Iraq, Rebecca and husband, Cory Campbell of Hancock, Lee Anne of Ellsworth and Joshua of Hancock; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Bridgewood and Sara Spoon of Ellsworth; one sister, Eleanor Brooks of Hancock; one brother, Lloyd “Bullet” Wilbur of Franklin; a sister-in-law, Virginia Wilbur of Eastbrook; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Maxine E. Wilbur in 1998; a son, Donald in 1980; and by three brothers, Rev. Gerard Wilbur in 1990, Leroy and Shirley Wilbur in 2003. Friends are invited to visit with family, 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth. Interment with military honors will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery, Eastbrook, at a date following his grandson’s return from Iraq.
