GUILFORD – John Robinson Maxfield, 95, died April 17, 2006, at a Camden healthcare facility. John was born May 20, 1911, in Abbot, the youngest son of Abner Ralph and Nellie (Hussey) Maxfield. One of his fondest memories was that he was a member of the Guilford High School basketball team that beat Bangor. John attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. where he received an engineering degree. During World War II he was employed in the aircraft industry. After the war, he started his own manufacturing business in Michigan. He and Ruth remained in Michigan until his retirement. However, he and Ruth, with their daughter, Gail, often returned to Maine. Eventually they bought a home in Lincolnville Beach, where he and his grandchildren enjoyed many summers. John noted that he was the “last of a long line of Maxfields,” starting with John Maxfield in Salsbury, Mass. in 1640. He was a member of the Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge No. 109 in Guilford since 1934. He also was a member of the Elks and the Knights of Pythias in Hillsdale, Mich. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Taylor Maxfield; his siblings, Donald, James, Richard, Alice and Jean; and his dear companion, Lela Nelson. He is survived by a daughter, Gail and her husband, Donald Moss, of Rockport; three grandchildren, Lawrence Murphy, Kellie Lanning, and Karrie Runles; and four great-grandchildren, Max and Lauren Murphy, Chris Kaufmin, and Jacob Lanning. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford, conducted by members of Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Guilford Historical Society. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal, Guilford.
