EAST MILLINOCKET – Lauretta Louise Smith, 74, passed peacefully into heaven surrounded by family June 16, 2006, after a long illness. Born Sept. 19, 1931, in Caribou, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Alice (Brown) Elliott. She graduated from Caribou High School, Class of 1949. She was the beloved wife of James H., with whom she had shared nearly 54 years of marriage. She was actively involved in Girl Scouting as a leader for nearly 14 years. Lauretta was known for her enthusiasm at Schenck High’s sporting events. Her children are proud to say she never missed an opportunity to support them in their sporting, music, theater or academic events, while they were growing up. Thirty nine years ago, she and Jim with their young family began their lifelong journey of developing and running Jo-Mary Lake Campground, all the while making lifelong friends that to this day bring so much joy to their lives. She and Jim raised five children, daughter, Kim Glildden of East Millinocket and her husband, Tom and their two children, Jennifer Civiello and husband, Gabe and Amy Glidden and her friend, Dennis Whitham, daughter, Holly Smith Pelkey of Mattamiscontis and her husband, Bryan and their three children, Elizabeth, Hillary and Jacob, daughter, Candie Smith of Gorham and her husband, Bryan Speirs and their two children, Zachary and Elliott, daughter, Mary Smith of East Millinocket and her son, Brodie Mackin and her daughter, Brooke Mackin and her granddaughter, Kenadie Shea Mackin, son, James E. Smith of Caribou and friend, David Conner; a stepgrandson, Andrew, wife, Kerrie-Jo and their children, MiKayla and Rabecka, and stepgrandson, Jon, wife, Julie and their children, Timothy and Maria. She will be sadly missed by her constant companion, Bridgette “the dog.” She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Richard Powell and his wife, Dawn; two sisters-in-law, Jackie Aucoin and Roberta Whitten of Caribou along with many loving nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Elliott; and sister, Colleen Elliott. A time of visitation will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at her home, 38 Cedar St., East Millinocket, where a service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. conducted by Pastor Ronald Libby of Souls Harbor Church. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the nurses of Community Health and Counseling and Dr. Jenkins and the Millinocket Regional Hospital staff.
