WALDOBORO – Marjorie Cleaves Bailey, 94, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at her home. Marjorie was born May 27, 1913, in Boston, the daughter of Louis and Leona Robbins Cleaves. Marjorie was a graduate of Thayer Academy, South Braintree, Mass. She continued her education at Bradford Junior College and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, Boston. Before the war, she worked in the banking industry in Boston as a secretary. In 1942 she joined the U.S. Navy and trained in Oklahoma, and was stationed in Washington, D.C., in naval communications. After the war, she was honorably discharged from the Navy, but continued in the same job as a civilian. In 1952 during the Korean War, Marjorie was recalled to the Navy and spent one year in Hawaii, in the National Security Agency as a cryptologist. She was a caregiver to her father for a great many years, and after retirement spent her winters in Florida and her summers in Deer Isle. In 1977, she married Stanley Bailey and together they made their home in Waldoboro, spending time there and at their home in Deer Isle, while continuing to spend the cold winter months in Florida. Marjorie was a member of Waldoboro Women’s Club; Daughters of American Revolution, Rockland; Wollaston Baptist Church, Massachusetts; and attended First Baptist Church, Waldoboro. Survivors include her cousins, Ford Dame of Massachusetts, Herbert Dame of New Hampshire, Doris Dawe of Massachusetts and Elise Price of Massachusetts; special friend, John Gatcombe and his wife, Joanne, of Waldoboro; oldest, dearest friends, Anna Griffin and Gay Bogard of Warren; and caregivers, Roberta Ames, Maurene Blake, Mary Pullen and Robert Gregory. There will be a graveside service 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Rural Cemetery, Waldoboro. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
