DEER ISLE – Milton W. Grindle, 84, passed away Nov. 6, 2007, at a Bangor hospital after a long illness. Milton was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Stonington, to Charles and Ada (DeCarteret) Grindle. Milton was a World War II veteran that served in the U.S. Army Air Corp, 1943-1945. During his service time he was in Italy and participated in the European-African-Middle East Campaign, receiving a Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star for meritorious service. He was very proud of his service for his country. After returning home to the island he loved, he married Kathryn Donovan and together they raised five children. Milton was a 50-year member of Masonic Marine Lodge No. 122. His working life included the lumber business, granite and carpentry. He worked at Billings Diesel and Marine, Stonington, for 17 years, retiring in 1986. Milton treasured the labor and memories of the vessels he worked on and the dear friends he worked with. After retirement, Milton and Kathryn enjoyed traveling for a few months each winter to various places in Florida and South Carolina, for several years. Milton is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Kathryn; two daughters, Gayle Brown of Topsham and Linda Stevens of Township 22 Middle Division; three sons, Gerald Donovan and his wife, Nola, of Deer Isle, Richard and his wife, Sherri, of Orrington and David of Deer Isle, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Milton was predeceased by his special granddaughter, JoAnne Donovan in 1974. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at First Congregational Church, Deer Isle. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in Milton’s memory to Memorial Ambulance Corps, Deer Isle, ME.
