LUBEC – Bill Haskins, 96, storyteller extraordinaire, went to be with his Lord Aug. 22, 2008, at a Machias health care facility. He had to tell the angels they could find all the information they needed on page 222 In the Book! He was born Sept. 22, 1911, in Lubec, the son of Webster Milo and Rena (Haney) Haskins. He was educated in Lubec schools and worked at many various jobs through the years to include working in the Lubec factories, a janitor at the school, manager for Haskins Canning Co., a diesel operator at Lubec Water and Electric, and as a switchboard operator for Cutler Naval Station until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of Christian Temple Church, Lubec, serving as a board member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. He was a member of Lubec Grange, Pamona Grange and the I.O.O.F until the time they surrendered their charter. He was also a firefighter for the Lubec Fire Department. Bill enjoyed baseball and was fortunate enough to remember three World Series by his beloved Boston Red Sox. He spent many enjoyable years playing music and doing recitations. He also got enjoyment from his special meetings over breakfast and coffee, both in Lubec and Ellsworth. He is survived by a son, W. Milo Haskins and wife, Jeannine; and a daughter, Gloria Bowers; grandchildren, James Case, Billy Case, Linda Davis, Shawn Tinker, Lori King and Carla Sue Nutter; several great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth; one daughter, Mae Sawyer; and five brothers, Allison, Raymond, Archford, Edward and Andrew. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Christian Temple Church, Lubec, with the Rev. Alan Andreas officiating. Those wishing to make donations in his memory may do so to Christian Temple Church or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Lubec.
