GEORGINA M. FRIEL LAPSANSKI MONTEIRO CUMBERLAND, R.I. – Geor-gina M. Friel Lapsanski Monteiro, 68, of Sleepy Hallow Drive, passed away peacefully, Friday Oct. 3, 2008, at her home. She was the beloved wife of Bernardino A. Monteiro. She was born Feb. 22, 1940, in Millinocket, the daughter of the late Joseph and Vivian (Graham) Friel. Georgina graduated from St. Martin of Tours High School in 1958, as class valedictorian; Mont-Joli Teachers College in 1960; and Aquinas Institute, Dubuque, Iowa, in 1975, with a master’s degree in human relations. She was a school teacher for many years in Blanc Sablon, Labrador, Canada, where she developed and implemented social programs for the local population. In Olean, N.Y., she implemented the Friendly Visitation Program, as the aging services specialist in the Department of Aging. She was also the director of the Day Activity Center and coordinator of rehabilitation services at Mental Health Services, Cranston, R.I. She later became the director of activities at Louis Feinstein Alzheimer’s Center, retiring in 1997. Georgina was a kind and gentle person dedicated to helping the young, the old and the disadvantaged. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two stepdaughters, Julie Mumin of Cumberland and Donna Victor of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Christopher Monteiro of Coventry, R.I.; a sister, Gloria Spaulding and her husband, Robert, of Brunswick; a sister, Joyce Baron of Millinocket; a sister and brother-in-law, Joseph and Anne Lapsanski of Lincroft, N.J.; nephews, Mark Manzo, Chris Manzo, David Rand and John Rand; and nieces, Carla Manzo, Kate Lapsanski and Margaret Lapsanski, all of whom she loved very dearly. She was predeceased by her parents, first husband, Duane Lapsanski; her brother, Edward “Teddy” Friel; and brother-in-law, Leon Baron. The funeral was held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Vianney, Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, R.I. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends were in attendance.
