LINCOLN – Carolyn Kathryn McGillvray, 99, passed away Nov. 11, 2008, at a Lincoln health care facility. She was born Aug. 6, 1909, in Marysville, Pa., the daughter of Margaret (Dunkle) and Siegfried Karl Liese. She left home at an early age to pursue her career in Atlantic City, N.J., and Bermuda, where she met her future husband, Francis Xavier McGillvray. Together they started the first Western Auto Store, Lincoln, in May 1949. Carolyn was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother and cook, especially when it came to her pies. Oh, but those pies! In the early years in Lincoln, Saturday night, in town, was a busy time?to shop – no time to have supper. You met the train at 1 a.m. Saturday night after working a long week and long day till 9 p.m. store closing and making a weekly merchandise order after closing in order to get your order in the mail on the train. After retirement, she continued working part-time until the age of 85, when her eyesight began to deteriorate and she could not see to work the computer, but even then, she continued to help clean the store and assist customers. She and her husband, Frank, were fortunate to be able to travel extensively, which she continued to do even after his death in 1981. Some of her more exotic ports-of-call were Antarctica, India, Africa and Vietnam, where she fell and broke her hip. Three days later, she had to have a hip replacement in Thailand by a doctor and two nurses who spoke little English. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Frank; sisters, Sarah, Martha and Lillie; and brother, Marlin. She is survived by her son, Karl Franklin and daughter-in-law, Yoriko, of Lincoln; granddaughter, Karen Haruko McGillvray of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Thelma Taylor of Enola, Pa.; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 9-11 a.m. Friday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Myles Cyr presiding. Interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church, P.O. Box 310, Lincoln, ME 04457. Those who wish may sign an online register and leave written condolences at www.clayfuneralhome.com.
