CARMEL and BANGOR – Norman Albert Powell, 85, died Feb. 19, 2009, at a Bangor health care center. He was born July 29, 1923, at the Appleton-Powell Homestead, Carmel, the son of Albert and Bertha Powell. Norman attended the University of Maine, Orono. In January 1943, during his freshman year, he was drafted into the military. He served in Air Force mess halls in England from 1943 to 1945. After his service in the military, Norman completed his education at the University of Maine, Orono and Husson College, Bangor. Norman received his bachelor’s degree and worked as a business education teacher in high schools in Maine and Vermont. In April 1953, Norman married Ruth Mabel Horsman in Peacham, Vt. Norman and Ruth had four children, Peggy, Polly, David and Douglas. During more than 30 years in Vermont, Norman and his family lived in Peacham, Grafton, Townshend, Milton and Northfield. While living in Townshend, Vt., Norman became a board member of the West River Valley Development Association in Windham County. He was awarded a special certificate of appreciation when he left the organization due to relocation. He was also given a Certificate of Appreciation from Leland & Gray High School in recognition of his years of service as an educator. In 1986 Norman and Ruth retired to his birthplace in Carmel. Norman continued to work as a substitute teacher during the early years of his retirement. Norman and Ruth also made extended trips to England, where Ruth served as interim minister and Norman studied local history. He was a caring and dedicated husband and caregiver to Ruth when she suffered the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease. Norman is survived by his elder brother, Stanley of Carmel; daughters, Peggy of Burlington, Vt., and Polly of San Francisco; and sons, David Powell of New York City and Douglas Powell and his wife, Judy (Burbank), of Williston, Vt. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; his eldest brother, Raymond; Raymond’s wife, Grace and their son, Robert; and Raymond’s second wife, Eloise. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Brookings-Smith. 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating. Spring interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Carmel.
