ASHLAND – Carroll L. Forbes, 87, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and family man, passed away May 30, 2009, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Caribou. Carroll was born April 8, 1922, son of Freeman and Inza (Alley) Forbes. He grew up in Wade, Washburn and Mapleton, near Haystack. Carroll served in the U.S. Army, 486 Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Battalion, as a private and tec 5 in England, France, Belgium and Germany, as a heavy equipment operator from 1943 to 1945. Upon returning home from the service, he went to work in the woods for Morin and Morin Lumber Mill for 15 years, then moved to Connecticut to work for Jerry Torrence for 15 years. After moving back to Maine, he started working for International Paper Co., until he retired. He was an outdoors person who loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed helping others in need. Carroll was predeceased by wife, Elsie (Boyce) Forbes of Ashland; three brothers, Roland Forbes and wife, Marlene, of Presque Isle, Merle Forbes and wife, Edwina, of Presque Isle and Milton Forbes and wife, Addy, of Alabama; two sisters, Geraldine Miller of Winterport and Doris Gladden of Tennessee; two sons, Carroll Forbes Jr. of Ashland and Delmar Forbes of Connecticut; one grandson, Travis Sharp of Fort Fairfield; and one great-grandson, Tyson Sharp of Fort Fairfield. He is survived by two daughters, Clarice Lamere of Portage and Inza Sharp of Castle Hill; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Caribou Veterans’ Home for their compassionate and professional care of Carroll Forbes. The family also extends a heartfelt and sincere thank you to his niece, Gail (Forbes) Woodman and her family of Castle Hill for being there for him in his time of need. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Southside Cemetery, Mapleton, with Pastor Lucy Lovley officiating.
