NEWPORT and DIXMONT -Richard Manning Thompson Sr., 71, died unexpectedly May 31, 2009. He was born June 17, 1937, in Farmington, a son of Albert and Mary (Titcomb) Thompson. He graduated from Farmington High School, Class of 1956; the University of Maine, Orono, Class of 1960; and also received his master’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono, through summer courses. Dick taught at Woodland High School from 1960 to 1968, and at Nokomis Regional High from 1968 to 1992, for a total of 32 years teaching physical education, coaching varsity soccer, basketball and indoor and outdoor track. He will be remembered for his coaching success, having never missed a soccer playoff from 1969 to 1992. He coached the winning state champion Class A track and field team in 1985. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity, was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, auto enthusiast, and loved his cabin on the hill in Dixmont and his camp on Big Indian Lake. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Parish, Pittsfield, but attended St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Bangor. Dick is survived by two sons, Richard Jr. and wife, Rose, and Gary and wife, Katherine, all of Glenburn; two daughters, Lisa and husband, Rock Oliver, of Mattamiscontis and Vanessa and husband, Gerry Lincoln, of Dixmont; eight grandchildren, Zachary, Nathan, Nicholas and Lauren Thompson, Hayleigh and Joel Oliver, Noelle Lincoln and Amber Horr; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Dalaney Horr; many nieces and nephews; a special friend, Susan Rush of Bangor; his mother-in-law, Rita Wallace; and brother-in-law, Robert and wife, Maxine Geroux, all of Calais. He was predeceased by his wife, Flora, Feb. 3, 2000; and by his two sisters, Linda Winslow and Shirley Coombs. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
