FARMINGDALE – George Burton Woodard Sr., 89, of Kennebec Village, went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta. He was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Hersey, the son of Vern and Sadie Woodard. He was raised on a small farm and attended school in Hersey. In 1938, he married Eleanor Glidden and they raised four children in the town of Crystal until 1960. For much of his young life, he worked in the woods cutting pulp, worked for potato farmers and worked in sawmills. In 1963, with his family, he ventured onward to a new career at VA Hospital and spent 18 years there helping others until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement, he spent many years doing volunteer work for Senior Spectrum and the food bank. He was a member of Kennebec Valley Assembly of God Church, Chelsea. His passion and commitment was serving the Lord and being helpful to others. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, in 1996; and sisters, Louise Woodard and Erma Rush. He is survived by a son, George Woodard Jr. of Nevada; three daughters, Esther Harvey of Patten, Hazel Reynolds of Augusta and Janet Ober of Whitefield; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. His family thanks the staff of Maine Veterans’ Home for their exceptional care. Friends and relatives may visit 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Kennebec Valley Assembly of God Church with funeral services beginning 11 a.m. Burial will be at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
