MERIDAN, Conn. – John Frederick Dumont, 72, was granted his angel wings Wednesday, June 24, 2009, after an unexpected diagnosis and sudden fight with lung cancer. John was born Nov. 20, 1936, at home in Old Town, to Doris (Fogarty) and Camille, the fourth of seven children and known as “Jackie” throughout his childhood. John was a man who was passionate about his family. He loved to have family gathered to create memories by playing, eating, and telling stories. He was known for his “can do” spirit. He attended a one room school house from kindergarten to second grade, Pea Cove School, grades 3-6 at Great Works School and grades 7-9 at Helen Hunt Junior High. Upon encouragement and great need of his family, he had to quit school to help work on the family farm and log in the woods at the tender age of 14. During his lifetime he resided in Mexico, Maine, Honolulu and Cape Girardeau, Mo. His career as a foreman/supervisor took him to many construction projects throughout the state of Maine and other states. He also bred Labrador retrievers as a hobby. After earning his GED, John used his keen ability to lead others and organize projects to spend 19 years as a resident manager of luxury condominiums in Honolulu. On Jan. 1, 1988, he married his soul mate, Anne (Stratton) Dumont, in Kauai, Hawaii. They spent many wonderful years together in Hawaii, until her passing in 1995. He is loved by his stepson, Bobby and his wife, Mutsumi, and their children, Bun, Sophia and Will; and a stepdaughter, Kathy Torr and her son, Nick and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Juliana and Alexandria. John retired in August 2004 to Cape Girardeau, Mo., with his then companion, Bette Bell, to the Chateau Girardeau, a retirement community. He created the White Hat Society, an offshoot of the well-known Red Hat Society. He built many wooden projects and many toys and puzzles for his “grands.” He designed and built unique cribbage boards for his close relatives, a true family heirloom. He volunteered at the intensive care unit at the local hospital every week as a tribute to his late daughter, Lisa Dumont Colson. He is survived and forever loved by his children, Carl Dumont and his wife, Darcy, of Columbia, Kevin Dumont and wife, Carmen, of San Francisco, Tammy Dumont Fisher and her husband, Jim, of Sabattus daughter, Tasha Dumont Purington and her husband, Chris, of Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; his grandchildren, who he endearingly called “his grands,” and always admired him, Stephanie Colson, Maggie and Jack Dumont, his namesake, Zack, Sabrina and Gabriella Fisher, Ashley, Megan, Lisa and Emily Purington; his siblings, Ovid “Sonny” Dumont and his wife, Joanne, of Howland, James “Jimmy” Dumont and his wife, Donna, of Old Town, foster sister, Donna Perry of Florida and his sister and best friend, Emma O’Brien and her husband, Ed, of Meriden, Conn.; 18 nieces and nephews; and many more extended family members. He was especially close with his nephew, Rick Walker. Those waiting on the shores of heaven to welcome him home were his brothers, Robert and Louis Dumont; parents, Camille and Doris Dumont; little sister, Doris “Dottie” Cox; his soul mate, Anne (Stratton) Dumont; and his daughter, Lisa Dumont Colson. His favorite black lab, Babe, was also waiting. Committal of ashes will be held noon Saturday, July 4, at Alton Cemetery, Bennoch Road, Alton.
