CALAIS – Ernest C. McKay, 88, passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at Calais Regional Hospital. Ernest was born Jan. 4, 1921, in Bath, son of the late George and Davida (White) McKay. He graduated from Calais Academy and went on to train as a machinist. Ernest joined the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy. Being wounded in Italy, he received the Purple Heart. Ernest returned home to Calais and worked for years as a bricklayer. He was a member of Sherman Bros. Post No. 3 American Legion and Boyd-Smith Post No. 9779 Veterans’ of Foreign Wars. Ernest enjoyed traveling and spending time in the outdoors fishing and camping. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Sonya; six brothers, Carl, Edward, Donald, George, Claude and David; and five sisters, Edith, Caroline, Helen Stailing, Davida McArthur and Gloria Huntington. Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret (McVicar) McKay; his son, Philip of Freeport; and a daughter and son-in-law, Ernestine and Roger Letarte of Biddeford. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais and Eastport.
