UNITY – Jacqueline “Jackie” Gay Berry, 73, passed away peacefully Dec. 16, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility after a short illness. She was born April 28, 1936, in Corinna, a daughter of George “Sam” H. and S. Rae (McKenney) Whitney. Jackie graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1954. She worked at various jobs in Maine and Massachusetts. She loved fishing and an occasional battle with woodchucks in her garden. Jackie was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning as much as planting. Many will miss the delicious pickles and other stove top delicacies she created. Above all Jackie was a quilter and a seamstress. She created many lovely and prize winning works of art. Jackie will also be remembered by many as a hard working and generous person. One of her greatest passions was working for Good Steward thrift store. She enjoyed singing, not only in the church choir, but with the Kenebelles. Jackie was a member of many granges in the Unity area. She was also a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Scrapbaggers Quilting Club, and taught sewing and quilting through Maine Cooperative Extension. She is survived by her daughter, Carlista “Kelly” and husband, Darrell Heaberlin; brother, Roger Whitney and wife, Joanne; grandson, Thomas Heaberlin and girlfriend, Kyla McConnell; granddaughter, Jessica Heaberlin and boyfriend, Craig Mathies; and the apple of her eye, great-grandson, Grey Thomas Heaberlin. Sadly she will not meet her other great-grandson, Kempton Darrell Mathies. She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother, Bruce. She will also be missed by her church family and her special pet, Bobby the cat. The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Stillwater Health Care, especially Jackie’s friend and caring nurse, Sandra. There will be no visitation at the family’s request. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Unity Union Church, 13 Depot St., Unity, with the Rev. Katherine Russo officiating.
