SOUTH CHINA – Maud I. Peterson, 83, of Dirigo Road, died Jan. 2, 2010, in Lewiston. She was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Grindstone, the daughter of William Burby and Elizabeth (Bushey) Burby. Mrs. Peterson was a 1944 graduate of Schenck High School, East Millinocket. She was employed by the Veterans Administration Center at Togus for 30 years. She was an amateur radio operator. Mrs. Peterson attended United Methodist Church of Vassalboro. She was a member of Metis of Maine, and various amateur radio clubs and veterans auxiliary groups. She was of French and First Nation Native American ancestry and the greatest fan of the 2 Feathers Drum. She was also predeceased by her husband, John A. Peterson; a brother, Norman Burby; and a sister, Josephine York. Surviving are two sons, Neil Pelkey of South China and Michael Pelkey of Navato, Calif.; one stepson, Robert Peterson of Sparks, Nev.; one brother, Frank Burby of North Carolina; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers will be offered at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
