FALMOUTH – Evander Willis “Andy” Andrews died Jan. 28, 2010, in Portland, after a stroke. Born Nov. 11, 1925, on a farm in Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Andy was a lifelong Mainer. He leaves a loving family and many close friends: his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Beal Andrews of Falmouth; daughters, Paula Andrews and her husband, Jim Cook, of North Carolina, and Jennifer Andrews and her husband, Mark Battista, of Portland; his grandson, Nick Battista of Portland; and Masako Sakata of Japan, part of the family since her year-long stay as an exchange student in 1965. During World War II, Andy served on submarines in the Pacific. He and Helen started raising their family in East Madison and then moved to Camden. After retiring, they spent many winters in Fort Myers and on Sanibel Island Fla., where they also have many close friends. Andy and Helen recently moved to Andrews Avenue, Falmouth. For many years, Andy was the branch manager for Depositors’ Trust Bank, Camden. He also managed the finances for a small manufacturing plant and was involved in a local real estate partnership. Andy served as president of Rotary Club and the congregational church; treasurer of Camden YMCA; kept the books for the Camden library; and supported many other good causes. Andy enjoyed fishing for brook trout and he was passionate about the Maine wilderness. The family spent many happy times near Bingham in their one-room camp that Andy built with his father. He loved the good earth and working in the garden. A talented artist, he painted watercolors right up to his last day at home. He will be greatly missed by his many friends in Maine, Florida and elsewhere around the country. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Falmouth Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in his memory to either Penobscot Bay/Camden YMCA or Maine Island Trail Association. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., Portland.
