UMPI sweeps SUNY Canton

Stephen Thorne scored the winning run on a sacrifice squeeze by Cody Humphrey to cap a three-run ninth and lead the University of Maine-Presque Isle to a 9-8 win over the State University of New York Canton in Sunday’s first game at Presque Isle. UMPI also won the second game 7-6.
On Saturday in Caribou, the Owls swept the Kangaroos 10-7 and 8-4.
UMPI’s Corey Harding hit a three-run home run and an RBI single in Saturday’s nightcap. James Cirell tripled and doubled with three RBIs in Sunday’s first game. Tyler Delaney hit a three-run homer in the third inning of Sunday’s nightcap.

Bates sweeps Colby
At Waterville, Bates College of Lewiston scored five times in the seventh inning to rally past Colby College 7-3 in Saturday’s first game. Bates also won the second game 7-2 to set a team record of 19 wins in a season.
Bates’ Gordy Webb hit a two-run single in the first game and homered in the second game.
Colby’s Brendan Gallagher homered in the second game and doubled in the first.

USM sweeps Plymouth State
At Gorham, senior lefthander Collin Henry tossed a seven-inning, three-hit shutout to lead the University of Southern Maine past Plymouth State 10-0 in Saturday’s first game.
The Huskies also won the second game 6-5.
John Carey hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning of the nightcap for the Huskies.

Bowdoin, Tufts split
At Brunswick, Carter Butland didn’t allow an earned run through eight innings and recorded seven strikeouts in leading Bowdoin College to a 12-4 win over Tufts University in Saturday’s second game. Tufts took the first game 7-5.
Ben Higgins doubled, singled and drove in three runs in the second game for Bowdoin. Matt Ruane, Joe Comizio and Adam Marquit homered in Game 2.

Husson wins two of four
At Castleton, Vt., trailing by a run in the seventh inning, Ethan Guerette hit an RBI double to tie it at 2-2, then Cody Haverly-Johndro hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to lead Husson University to a 3-2 win over Castleton State College in Sunday’s first game. Castleton State won the second game 3-1.
On Saturday, Castleton State won the first game 9-2 and Husson took the nightcap 6-3.
Castleton takes the top seed and will host the NEAC East tournament starting Friday. They will play No. 4 Lyndon State and No. 2 Husson will face No. 3 Thomas.
Husson’s Jake Arthers and Tim Briand-Evans each drove in three runs in Saturday’s second game.
In Sunday’s first game, Husson’s Guerette had a double, two singles and two RBIs.

In the second game, Alyssa Lepore posted two doubles, a single and two RBIs to lead Colby.

SUNY Canton sweeps UMPI
The State University of New York Canton outscored the University of Maine-Presque Isle 25-3 in Presque Isle on Sunday with scores of 12-1 and 13-2.
On Saturday in Caribou, the Kangaroos topped the Owls 5-2 and 10-2.
UMPI’s Emily Staples hit a two-run double in the second inning of Saturday’s first game while Nicole Russell hit a solo homer in Saturday’s nightcap. Danielle Humphrey had three doubles and an RBI in Sunday’s first game.

Thomas sweeps Lyndon State
At Waterville, Thomas College swept a doubleheader with Lyndon State on Saturday, taking the first game 11-2 in five innings and the second 16-4 in five innings.
In the first game, Kristina Drew posted three hits while Alexandra Kriegel and Samantha Moore each had two RBIs for the Terriers.
In the second game, Kelsey Crowe had two hits while Kaymala Eells tallied three RBIs for Thomas.

Top seed Husson unbeaten again
Husson University’s softball team clinched the top seeding again by going 14-0 in North Atlantic Conference play for the second straight year.
Husson of Bangor will host the NAC tournament Friday through Sunday at O’Keefe Field and get a first-round bye, along with No. 2 Maine Maritime Academy, for Tuesday’s first-round games.
Husson plays the winner of Tuesday’s Castleton State/Thomas game on Friday at 10 a.m. MMA meets the winner of Tuesday’s Johnson State/UMaine-Farmington game Friday at noon.
Husson played a makeup game Saturday after the second game of its doubleheader against Thomas College was rained out Friday and knocked off Thomas 8-5.
Saturday, Lona Sargent of Sullivan had three singles and Brianna Webster of Belfast two singles and two RBIs to pace the Eagles’ offense. Megan Richard of Wilton notched the victory.
Mallorie Blakney of Fairfield and Samantha Moore of Etna each singled three times for the Terriers.

Huskies drop two
At Gorham, Molly Rathbun picked up two wins Saturday, improving her record to 15-1, to lead Eastern Connecticut State to a doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine.
The Huskies lost the first game 8-3 and the second 6-5.

At Nashua, N.H., Kelsey Tuthill hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning and No. 3 Emerson College held on to defeat No. 2 Saint Joseph’s College of Standish 5-4 in Sunday’s elimination game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship.
Top-seeded Rivier College beat Emerson 1-0 in eight innings to win the championship Sunday afternoon.
The Monks topped No. 4 Simmons College Saturday 11-3.
On Sunday, Bridget Farago hit a double, two singles and scored three runs for Emerson.
Alyssa Dunn homered for the Monks. Maria Labbe doubled and singled and Anna Willis hit two singles.

At Farmington, the University of Maine-Farmington swept Lyndon State 10-1 and 14-6 in Sunday’s first doubleheader.
In the second twinbill, the Beavers topped Maine Maritime Academy of Castine 5-4 in nine innings, but the Mariners won the nightcap 5-3.
Cassandra Dyer drove in four runs and scored three for the Beavers in the first game. Dyer and Barnes each had four hits in the second game.
Dyer hit an RBI bunt single in the ninth in the third game, driving in Emily Coye to lead the Beavers to victory.
Kayla Higgins hit two doubles and knocked in a run to lead the Mariners in the fourth game.

At Farmington, the University of Maine-Farmington slipped past Johnson State 6-5 in eight innings in the opener and routed the Badgers 13-5 in six innings in the nightcap for a doubleheader sweep Saturday.
In Game 1, Kaitlyn Bartlett hit a solo home run and an RBI double to lead the Beavers.
In the nightcap, Casandra Dyer hit three singles and knocked in two runs for UMF.

At Castine, Paul Battapaglia scored four goals Saturday as Mount Ida College defeated Maine Maritime Academy.
Christopher Kelley led the Mariners with three goals. Wade Mondoux, Toddy Murphy and Andrew DiSalvo also scored single goals.
James McAllison saved 13 of 19 shots for Mount Ida. MMA’s Kevin Boucher turned away 15 of 31 shots.

At Newton Center, Mass., Matthew Savage scored four goals Sunday as 10-6 Mount Ida College cruised past Husson University of Bangor.
Ben Landry scored two goals for the 9-7 Eagles. Mitch Heaps added a goal.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Husson wins NAC title

At Bangor, Shelby Bradford of Lee scored six goals and assisted on one Sunday as Husson University defeated the University of Maine-Farmington 15-6 to win the North Atla
ntic Conference East Division title.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Husson beat Thomas College of Waterville 22-4 and UM-Farmington topped Green Mountain College 12-11.
Alex Laniewski had four goals and an assist for the 9-1-1 Eagles against UM-Farmington. Megan Clement scored three goals while Kim Gambon and Alex Huffman both scored a goal.
Jessica Allen led the 4-6 Beavers with three goals. Amie Daniels scored two goals and Anna Rerrick also scored.
Kristen Capen and Nikki Burns combined for three saves on nine shots for the Eagles. Andrea Knox turned away 18 of 33 shots for the Beavers.
Bradford was named tournament MVP. Teammates Caitlyn Butterfield, Clement, Laniewski and Michelle Rancourt were also named to the All-Tournament team along with UMF’s Daniels, Allen, Ashley Wentworth and Jessie LaCasse. Thomas’ Megan Denby and Teshia Cates and Green Mountain’s Bryanna Astor and Amanda Malkin were selected as well.

At Hodgdon, Dakota Sleeper pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to power Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook by Hodgdon.
Sleeper helped his own cause with two singles and an RBI for the Warriors. Pat Goodall posted two doubles and two RBIs while Chris Casey added two singles and an RBI.
Josh Hudson broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh for Hodgdon.

Presque Isle, Old Town split
At Old Town, Gabe Melmed hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in Josh Moul for the game-winning run as Old Town topped Presque Isle 7-6 in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader.
The Wildcats took the first game 4-3 in eight innings.
In the first game, Wilder York hit a two-out RBI single to drive in Dillon Kingsbury with the game-winning run. York finished with three singles and an RBI. Brennen Shaw and Kingsbury each doubled while Matt Chasse had an RBI single.
Casey Estes recorded two RBIs and a double for Old Town. Zak Kochis added an RBI double.

Ellsworth Softball League

ELLSWORTH — An organizational meeting of the Ellsworth softball league will be held in the city council chambers April 27 at 6 p.m. Teams interested in the adult men’s league or starting a co-ed league should have a representative at this meeting. Play starts at the end of May. Any teams wanting to use the field for practice should contact the YMCA at 667-3086. Anyone with questions about the league should call Don Piper at 460-7987.
