ORONO – Owen Joseph Logue Jr., 88, died peacefully June 20, 2010, surrounded by his loving family and beloved wife of almost 60 years. Joe was born Dec. 10, 1921, in Woburn, Mass., son of Owen J. and Helen (Walsh) Logue. He graduated from Woburn High School and Holy Cross College. Joe, donned in a suit of armor atop a white stallion, was the mascot at Holy Cross football games. On June 17, 1951, he made the best decision of his life to marry Joan Forbes. The two of them moved to Maine shortly thereafter, where they raised four children. Joe worked for 35 years for General Foods, where his territory covered the northern two-thirds of Maine. He loved his work and the stories his travels generated. Joe was a good neighbor and active member of the community. He helped start the area’s first speech and hearing center and served on the board of directors of Bangor Regional Speech and Hearing Center and Treats Falls House. He was a faithful congregant at Newman Center, where he sat in his regular seat and, at times, timed Father Bill’s sermons. He finally forgave the church for abandoning Latin Masses. Joe loved his family unconditionally and was loved in return. He enjoyed exploring the nooks and crannies of Maine and sharing his special places with family. He especially loved Acadia, where he ran a riding stable in his youth. He was a true believer in the healing properties of a swim at Sand Beach, a good story – especially one that improved in the retelling – and homemade pie. You could find him at the noon adult swim at the Orono pool every day of summer, rain or shine, proud of his lifetime membership. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joan Forbes Logue of Orono; his daughters Mary Ellin Logue and husband, Mark Lesser, of Orono, Martha Monahan and husband, Donald Monahan, of Camden and Helen LaCount of Westbrook; his son, Owen Joseph Logue III and wife, Barbara Logue, of Southwest Harbor; as well as nine grandchildren, Brianna, Keira and Kyle Monahan of Camden, Amanda, Peter and Robert Logue of Southwest Harbor, Nathan and Daniel Lesser of Orono and Spencer LaCount of Westbrook; his sister, Jean Kaknes of York; several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Paul, Robert and James. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, at Parish of the Resurrection of the Lord, Newman Center, Our Lady of Wisdom Chapel, 83 College Ave., Orono. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. His family thanks the staff at the Veterans Home, Bangor; New Hope Hospice; St. Joseph Hospital; and special friends and neighbors. Gifts in Owen’s memory may be sent to Treats Falls House, 2 Hillside Road, Orono, ME 04473. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
