LUBEC – Stephen Francis Rier, 58, died unexpectedly Aug. 2, 2010, in an automobile accident near West Quoddy Head. He was born June 28, 1952, in Lubec, son of J. Barney and Rebecca (Manchester) Rier. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen P. Salko; stepdaughters, Tanya DiMarco and husband, Peter, and their children, Baylee and Mason, of Barrington, R.I., and Aimee Salko and fiance, Kevin Flynn, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., whom he loved as if they were his own. He also leaves two brothers, Frank and wife, Maria, of Jay, and children, Erica Fleminger and her husband, Joel, and their daughter, Isadora, of Patagonia, Ariz., Rachel, Conrad and Nick, and Ed and wife, Lauren, of Lubec; three sisters, Cathy Greenhalgh and husband, Dave, of Fletcher’s Landing, and children, Nathan Hemmingway and wife, Wynne, and son, Anthony, of Melbourne, Australia, Marianne of Fayetteville, N.C., Doug of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Lynne of Tucson, Ariz., Janet Rier and son, Adrian, of Lubec, Carolyn Lynch and husband, Kevin, and daughter, Shauna, of Fletcher’s Landing. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends. Steve tried to find the good in everyone and sometimes he couldn’t find much. It didn’t matter to Steve, though, like his mother, Becky, he would befriend the friendless and help the helpless. Steve was always a man among men. He was trained by his father, Barney, to stand up to those who would bully others. “Don’t you ever stand by and let someone be hurt. You jump in there and take care of it,” Barney always told Steve. Steve never stood by. How many men can lay claim to such courage? There are too few Steve’s today and even with his foibles, he was a better man than many knew. It is said a man is measured more by those who love him than by his worldly accomplishments. Steve had many friends who loved him and he loved them. Steve was deeply loved by Kathy and his brothers and sisters. You have earned your peace, dear Steve Visiting hours will be held 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug 5, at McClure Family Funeral Services, 1192 Boot Cove Road, Lubec. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lubec, with Father Eugene Gaffey officiating. Burial will be after in the Rier family lot at Old Chapel Cemetery, Trescott.
