WALDOBORO and FORT KENT – Roger Barbour Greene, 66, a direct descendent of Maj. Gen. Israel Putnam, a Revolutionary War hero at Bunker Hill, passed away peacefully Jan. 9, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Maine Medical Center, Portland. He was born May 23, 1944, in Bridgeport, Conn., son of the late Howard and Harriett (Southgate) Greene. He grew up in Fairfield and attended local schools including Andrew Ward High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy, and after a year of service, matriculated to the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served for four years aboard a weather cutter in the North Atlantic before his honorable discharge in 1966. After his time in the service he moved to Waldoboro in 1970, where he was a dispatcher for RC Moore Inc. for five years, before leaving to become a commercial fisherman with the help of his good friend, Edward Thorbjornson of St. George. He fished out of Port Clyde for many years before becoming captain for the Riley’s of New Harbor and F.J. O’Hara of Rockland. After retiring from fishing in the late 1980s he became general manager for Fresh Pack Seafood. While with Fresh Pack he was able to travel to Alaska, Scotland, Iceland and Canada, buying fresh fish. He continued his career with Fresh Pack as a buyer at Portland Fish Exchange. After leaving Fresh Pack he started his own business, R.B. Greene Co., a salmon importing business until retiring in 2008. Upon his retirement he settled to Little Black Lake, Fort Kent. He was a master Maine guide, vice president of Maine Fisherman’s Co-op Association and an active member of American Legion Post 133, Fort Kent. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his good friend, Sen. David Trahan, as well as many others. He also served as Maine convenor and commissioner of Clan Donald USA in the 1980s. He was predeceased by a brother, Gary Putnam Greene. Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Alice Greene of Fort Kent; son, Scott Donaldson Greene and his wife, Jessica, of Waldoboro; granddaughter, Paige Elizabeth Greene of Waldoboro; brother, Howard S. Greene and his wife, Olive, of Bridgeport, Conn.; sister-in-law, Betty Greene of Holland, Mich.; many nieces and nephews. A time of visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A celebration of Roger’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Waldoboro United Methodist Church, Friendship Street, Waldoboro, with the Rev. Beverly Blaisdell and the Rev. Joseph Beardsley officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in the spring at German Cemetery, Waldoboro.
