NEWPORT – Robert “Bob” Cox, 76, died Feb. 9, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born March 2, 1934, in Orrington, a son of Walter and Mary Louise (Tardiff) Cox.
Bob graduated from John Bapst High School, Class of 1952; served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War; attended the University of Maine; and graduated from the University of Maine School of Law, Class of 1962. Bob lived and practiced law in Newport for more than 40 years. He served on Newport Board of Selectmen and Newport School Board. He was a past member of Knights of Columbus, Bangor Elks and Newport Kiwanis. Maxine and Bob wintered in Zephyrhills, Fla., and enjoyed summertime at Oak Pond, Skowhegan. Bob enjoyed traveling the rural roads of Maine and often took the “back way” to visit friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Maxine (Dillingham) Cox; his children, Anne Marie Johnson and companion, Rodney Rush, of Pittston, Jane and husband, Rick Varney, Charles Cox and wife, Ellen, all of Bangor, Carol and husband, Mark Kontos, of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, and Robert Cox Jr. and wife, Linda, of Canterbury, Conn.; stepchildren, Hal and wife, Marilee Clark, of Portsmouth, N.H., and Sue Norris of Palmyra; a brother, Walter and wife, Patricia Cox, of Hesperia, Calif.; a sister, Mary Lou and husband, Ray Cormier, of Castine; 14 grandchildren, Nicholas, Whittney and Emmaline Varney, Katie Sino and husband, Erald, William, Rose, Victoria and Rebecca Cox, Jordan and Karly Kontos, Hazen Clark and wife, Alicia, Darrin Clark, Garth and Tyler Norris; a special great-granddaughter, Dora Clark; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his “third son,” his son-in-law, Stanley Norris; and by 11 siblings, Mary, Francis, Jacqueline, George, Floyd, Lloyd, Ronald, Margaret, John, William and David. The family is grateful for the excellent care and support of the staff at Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at St. Agnes Church, 238 Detroit Ave., Pittsfield, with Father Kent Ouellette officiating.
