ROCKLAND – Charlotte Burnett Young, 76, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, after a period of declining health. Born May 28, 1934, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of Ross D. and Charlotte C. Olson Mowatt.
Raised in Calais, she attended local schools and was a 1951 graduate of Calais Memorial High School. From 1951 to 1954, she attended Madigan Memorial School of Nursing, earning her degree as a registered nurse. On Valentine’s Day 1956, Burnett married John Young in Calais. She worked in several hospitals throughout the state, including A. G. Gould Hospital, Presque Isle, and Knox General Hospital as it developed into Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport. At the opening of Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Burnett helped establish the supplies, processing and distribution system at the hospital. In conjunction with her full-time nursing career, Burnett raised her family and was actively involved in their sports activities, including Brownie Scouts and PTA. After moving to Bangor with her husband in 1984, she worked with the American Red Cross and also served on the Red Cross Disaster Team until 1992. The couple returned to Rockland in 1993. For more than 20 years, they enjoyed RVing and spending winters in Florida. Burnett was a member of Knox County Nurses Guild and Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and enjoyed serving as a volunteer at Owls Head Transportation Museum. She loved knitting, cooking and the Red Sox.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, March 7, 2010. Burnett is survived by a son, J. David Young and his wife, Melinda, of Dandridge, Tenn.; two daughters, Barbara and her husband, Kenneth Rich Jr., of Rockland and Kathryn Young of Mount Kisco, N.Y.; one brother, Carl Mowatt of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Sue Lyons and her husband, Lendall, and Joan Corning, all of Calais; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn A. Young, Anna L. Rich and Makenzie R. Boylan; many nieces and nephews. Burnett’s family greatly appreciates the support of her friends and neighbors and the care she received from the staff of the Intensive Care Unit of Penobscot Bay Medical Center and the Special Care Units at Maine Medical Center.
A memorial gathering will take place 3:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Owls Head Transportation Museum, Route 73, Owls Head. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Deans Cremains Garden, Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland.
