BIDDEFORD – George Washington Gannon V, 78, of Pool Street, died Thursday, April 28, 2011, at a Biddeford health care facility. He was born Oct. 25, 1932, in Teaneck, N.J., a son of George Washington and Alva Sheridan Gannon IV.
He was educated in Rutherford, N.J., and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Fairleigh-Dickinson University and his master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. George served in the Coast Guard and worked as an electrical engineer for GTE Sylvania, Standish, until his retirement. He obtained his black belt in Shotokan karate at age 50. George was an avid militaria collector and dealer. He was in the top 10 of authorities for World War II military memorabilia.
Survivors include his son, Mark Gannon; daughter, Suzanne Gannon; and brother, Thomas Jefferson Gannon.
A visiting hour will be held 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham, where a memorial service will begin 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to World Wildlife Federation, P.O.
