NEWPORT – Lloyd W. Peirce, 79, died May 21, 2011, at a Pittsfield health care facility after a long illness. He was born July 15, 1931, in Exeter, the son of Lyle D. and Avis (Brann) Peirce.
He was a graduate of Corinna Union Academy, Class of 1950. Lloyd was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War serving on the USS Arneb in Cuba. Lloyd owned and operated Lyle D. Peirce Inc., a trucking company mainly hauling bulk milk. Lyle Peirce Inc. was started by Lyle D. Peirce of Exeter in the early 1930s and evolved to be owned and operated by Carl and Lloyd Peirce. In 1977 Lloyd and Zelda purchased the business and operated it from Newport. It is still owned and operated by Lyle D. Peirce II and family. Lloyd was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Exeter, a former member of the U.S. Trotting Association and Maine Harness Racing Association. He owned Fuel Pincher, Horse of the Year in 1985. Lloyd was married to Zelda (Metivier) Peirce for 51 years. She predeceased him Oct. 19, 2008.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Roberta “Bobbie” and Tony Bryson of East Wilton; two sons and their wives, Lyle and Dianne Peirce II of Newport and Terry “Brick” and Poppy Nelson of Wilbraham, Mass.; seven grandchildren, John, Matthew, Carrie, Trent, Lyle III, Andrew and Adam; six great-grandchildren, Jack, Laura, Evan, Mark, Emily Lynn and Lake; several nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by a special friend and companion, Ann Michaud. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Carl Peirce.
Friends and family may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, where funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, with Pastor Al Worden officiating.
