SKOWHEGAN – Glenwood A. Turner Jr., 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior Sept. 30, 2011, at his home with his family at his side. He was born May 28, 1924, in Salem, N.H., the son of Glenwood A. Turner Sr. and June (Packard) Turner.

Glenwood married Henriette “Henny” Debertin in June 1948 in Frankfurt, Germany. After working several jobs he began his career working for Ralph Dunlop driving the milk can truck for several years. Ralph Dunlop sold his business to Blaine Richardson where Glenwood then drove the bulk milk truck for 25 years. After retiring, he drove part time for Gifford’s hauling milk. He also worked for Skowhegan Police Department as a school crossing guard. He was a past member of Sno-Hawks Snowmobile Club, Skowhegan. He always had a garden, a vegetable stand and he grew potatoes to give to the Methodist Church, Skowhegan. He had a passion for working, loved spending time with his family and enjoyed taking the family to the drive-in movies. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was included in the second wave at Normandy in Northern France. He also was involved in Rhineland in Central Europe. He was wounded twice during World War II and received two Purple Hearts. He also guarded Gen. Eisenhower’s train as it toured Europe during the Occupation. He re-enlisted to return to Germany so he could marry his sweetheart, Henny.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Henriette of Skowhegan; his four children, Gerald Turner and his wife, Diane, of North Anson, Christina Smith and her life partner, Tommy Forshey, of Altoona, Pa., Michael Turner of Skowhegan and David Turner and his wife, Debra, of Anson; three brothers, Louis Turner and his wife, Natalie, of Skowhegan, Wayne Turner and his wife, Peggy, of South Carolina and Richard Turner and his wife, Carole, of Texas; three sisters, Charlene Soucier of Skowhegan, Glenna Shelp and her husband, Donald, of Florida and Marilyn Rich and her husband, Berwin, of Madison; grandchildren, Tiffany, Gabriel, Andy, Terry, Dustin, Brent, Melinda, Courtney and Jakob; stepgranddaughter, Denise; great-grandson, Cameron; and great-stepgrandchildren, Tyler, Ticy and Telena. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Turner; one sister, Maxine Gower; and two brothers-in-law, Richard Soucier and Norman Gower.

Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at Faith Baptist Church, 19 Washburn Lane, Skowhegan, with Pastor Steve Conley and Pastor Louis Turner. Interment will be after at East Skowhegan Cemetery. Donations may be made in Glenwood’s memory to Faith Baptist Church, 19 Washburn Lane, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
