HAMPDEN – Marwood Ray Clement Jr. died Oct. 21, 2011, at a Bangor health care facility. Marwood was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Cornwall, Ontario, the son of Marwood R. Clement of Gorham and Alta (Hill) Clement of Falmouth.

From 1925 the family resided in Rumford. He graduated from Stephens High School in 1941 and received a scholarship to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he joined the Naval Reserve Officer Training Program. In 1943 he transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. He served for two years as a destroyer officer and after flight training as a patrol plane and carrier pilot.

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1954 with a master’s degree in electronics and was one of the first naval officers to be trained in programming large computers for tactical use. He transferred to the Naval Reserve in 1962 and was employed by Univac Corp. until 1967. He was then vice president in charge of domestic sales for Incoterm Corp., manufacturers of the first programmable computer terminals. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1970 with the rank of captain. He and his wife Susan were married in Lewes, England, in 1973. They moved to Brooklin in 1978 and operated Brooklin General Store until 1986. In 2000 they left the coast and moved to Hampden. Marwood was a 50-year member of Blazing Star Lodge No. 30 AF & AM, Rumford, and a member of Pine Tree Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

Marwood is survived by his wife, Susan of Hampden; a brother, David B. Clement of Cornville; a daughter, Gail Thackeray; and a son, Marwood Clement III, both of Phoenix; a daughter, Meridith Clement of Glencoe, Ill.; and a granddaughter, Marie Clement of Phoenix.

At Marwood’s request, there will be no funeral services. Interment will be at Rainbow’s End Natural Cemetery, South Orrington. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden.
