‘Growing Local’

BANGOR — The Bangor Area Food Council and Maine Farmland Trust will present the new film “Growing Local” at noon and at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at COESPACE in Bangor.

The screenings will be followed by a group discussion including area stakeholders and farmers.

Growing Local is a collaboration between Maine Farmland Trust and Seedlight Pictures. The film points to the vibrancy and the growing pains of the local food movement in Maine, and the uncertain fate of the farmers and farmland that keep it alive.

The film contains three short vignettes: “Seeding A Dream,” “Pig Not Pork” and “Changing Hands.” Each focuses on a different challenge hindering the growth of the local food movement, and points toward possible solutions.

“Growing Local” recently debuted at the Camden International Film Festival. More information and a schedule of upcoming shows can be found on the Maine Farmland Trust website.

The screenings are free and open to everyone, but due to space limitations, preregister at surveymonkey.com/s/GrowingLocalMFTBANGOR.

Information about the event can be found at mainefarmlandtrust.org/films, or by emailing Heather Omand at bangorareafoodcouncil@gmail.com.

Wishing Under the Stars

BANGOR — The Brewer Kiwanis announced that it will host the third annual Wishing Under the Stars Gala at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at The Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. The Gala will raise money for Make a Wish Maine, an organization that grants wishes to children suffering from life threatening conditions.

“Last year we were able to raise $18,000 at this event, which was enough to grant three wishes for three local kids,” said Brewer Kiwanis Chapter President Karl Laurenovics. “With additional community support and attendance at this event, we hope to make 2015 our biggest wish granting year ever.”

The evening will feature a live and silent auction with more than 75 items up for bid, entertainment from comedian Tony V. of Boston, dinner and dessert, candy buffet and dancing.

“We are hoping to sell out the event this year and are well on our way,” said Laurenovics  “We still are accepting table sponsors and donations to the live or silent auction. Just give us a call and we can help you become a part of this unforgettable evening.”

Tickets are $50 per guest and may be purchased by calling Brewer Kiwanis Chapter President Karl Laurenovics at 944-0539 or by emailing brewerkiwanis@gmail.com.

Dog licensing

BANGOR — Dog owners in Maine are required to license their dogs by Dec. 31 of each year, but there is a 31-day grace period after that date for owners to complete the licensing process without incurring a late fee. That grace period ends Jan. 31, after which a $25 late fee will be imposed for each dog not licensed.

To license a dog, Bangor residents may visit bangormaine.gov and follow the link to the state of Maine online dog registration program, visit the City Clerk’s office at 73 Harlow St., or register through the mail by sending the proper documentation and payment to: City Clerk, 73 Harlow St., Bangor ME 04401.

Online dog registration is only available through Jan. 31, after which all licensing must be done through the City Clerk’s office. Owners who have lost their pet or no longer own it should contact the City Clerk’s office so the records may be updated.

The fee for licensing a dog is $6 for a spayed or neutered dog, and $11 for a dog that is capable of reproducing. Owners are required to show proof of their dog’s rabies vaccination and also a copy of the spay-neuter certificate, if applicable. For  information, call the City Clerk’s office at 992-4220.
