ROCKLAND, Maine — A 36-year-old Friendship woman was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail for assaulting a neighbor and kicking his dog.
Danielle Reed was sentenced by Justice Daniel Billings in Knox County Superior Court for assault, cruelty to animals, criminal trespass, and operating after suspension.
A deferred disposition agreement which would have reduced the charges had been reached with Reed a year ago. But Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald told the judge that Reed failed to meet conditions of that agreement by not attending counseling sessions.
Because of that failure, the seven day jail sentence offered under the earlier agreement was off the table and a 30-day sentence was agreed to by the defense and prosecution.
According to Fernald, Reed claimed that one of the people next door had been calling her names and she went over to confront them. A dog came out and she kicked it, grabbed a drink from the victim’s hand and tossed it in his face.
She then drove from the scene and was later found by police.
Reed claimed that she feared the dog was going to bite her and that she slapped the victim after he grabbed her arm.
Reed has a record that includes a 2003 conviction for aggravated assault.
