WEST ENFIELD – Douglas “Doug” S. Pond Sr., 63, went home to be with the Lord, Feb. 19, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with multiple illnesses. Son of Pauline (Hanson) Pond and the late Maurice S. Pond of West Enfield, he was born Jan. 4, 1945, in Lincoln, and was a member of the last graduating class from Howland High School, before it was renamed to Penobscot Valley High School in 1964. Doug was a well-known and loved member of both the Howland and Lincoln communities, having spent the majority of his life in the grocery business, most notably as manager of the A&P, Howland, and co-owner of the “Red Front” Lincoln Yankee Grocer in the 1970s and early 1980s. Faced with terminal illness at an early age in 1983, he is perhaps better known for defying the odds against him, time and time again throughout the last 25 years. His courage was an inspiration to many, but none more so than his wife and children. A member of West Enfield Baptist Church, he was steadfast witness for the Lord, his soft-spoken and heart-felt words touched many lives and his imprint will remain forever. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Brenda J. (Mallory) Pond also of West Enfield; his son, Douglas S. Pond Jr. of Rockville, Md.; his daughter, Bethellen E. (Pond) Gallino of Cape Coral, Fla.; his mother and two brothers, Pauline Pond, Roger W. Pond and Stuart A. Pond of West Enfield; several nieces and nephews, as well as extended family in the greater Howland, West Enfield, Enfield, Lincoln and down east Maine areas. Friends and family may gather in remembrance 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral and burial services will be held privately by the family Friday, Feb. 22. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society or CancerCare Unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Donations may be left at the funeral home.
