PORTLAND – “Therese Martin” Sister Mary Celine, RSM, 81, of Capisic Street, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, surrounded by the loving prayers of the Sister of Mercy Community and family at Mercy Hospital. She was born March 21, 1924, in Madawaska, a daughter of Denis and Alphonsine Raymond Martin. She attended Madawaska schools. She was employed at the Office of Soil Conservation and at the Madawaska Town Hall for several years. Sister Celine entered the Sisters of Mercy, Portland, in 1950. She ministered in a variety of areas, including being a kindergarten teacher at St. Dominic’s School, Portland; doing social work at Brownville Junction; clerical work at Mercy Hospital, Portland; and Religious Education in Gardiner. In 1958, Sister Celine was assigned to Madigan Memorial Hospital, Houlton, where she ministered until asked to serve at the newly opened ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, Eagle Lake, serving at the nursing and boarding home. She remained there until her health required that she return to the Portland area for medical treatment. In March, Northern Maine General, a non-profit social service organization serving northern and central Aroostook County, opened the Sister Celine Martin Home for Small Children, Presque Isle, to recognize Sister for her wonderful spirit and dedication for the care of people. Northern Maine General’s CEO, Reynold Raymond worked with Sister while she was at Eagle Lake. He enjoyed working with her and was pleased the new facility was named after a person who had such love and dedication for all of God’s people. She was predeceased by seven brothers, Patrick, Armand, Louis, Onias, Adrien, Leonard and Raymonde Martin; three sisters, Marie Mae Martin, “Rita Martin” Sister Mary Gerard, RSM, and Rose Michaud. She leaves a sister, Dolores Hayes; three brothers, Paul, Raynald and J. Normand Martin, all of Bangor; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and her Sisters of Mercy Community. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at St. Joseph’s Convent, 605 Stevens Ave., Portland, where a special prayer service will be held 7 p.m. A con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at St. Joseph’s Convent Chapel. Interment will take place 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Memorial contributions in Sister’s Celine’s memory may be made for the ministry and retirement needs of the Sister’s of Mercy, 605 Stevens Ave., Portland, ME 04103. Sister Celine wishes to extend her special thanks and appreciation to William Demicco, M.D.; George Abourjaily, M.D.; and other physician’s and nurses at Mercy Hospital who cared for her.
